Whether you’re moving in to a new space or have been staring at the same old rooms for many years now, you’re undoubtedly scratching your head over how to get started with new home decor.
There are a myriad of possibilities to choose from, and the time and monetary investment required means you’ll need to plan your design quite carefully. If you aren’t exactly an interior decorator at heart, some basic research will at least help you land on something functional and fashionable. With that in mind, here are a small number of the leading home decor trends of the past year:
1 – Varied Textures
It seems that a wealth of flat surfaces was the order of the day not that long ago. Minimalism will always have its place, but it has become considerably more fashionable to include a number of different textures in your rooms. There’s no need to worry anymore if your table tops, wallpaper, and upholstery all have different feels. Even if the differences are only subtle, it’s going to be more than enough to keep the space from feeling too monotonous or lifeless.
2 – Unique Shapes
In another move away from the strict rectangular shapes and straight angles of most modern decor, unique shapes are now perfectly acceptable for pretty much every aspect of your room. You can achieve this quite easily by picking furniture with noticeable curvature or oddly shaped light fixtures. This is an invaluable means of providing your space with a grander sense of fun. Any room where you intend to entertain will benefit greatly from the inclusion of as many varying shapes as you can find.
3 – Gray
If you do want to keep your rooms a bit more subdued however, gray is undoubtedly the way to go. It isn’t quite as stark or plain as pure black or white. As the natural in-between, it is incredibly striking while still maintaining a sense of neutrality. Just as with black and white, gray will also work in tandem with just about any other color you have in mind for contrast. (Green or red are among the most popular these days.) It might not be the best choice for a living room, but kitchens, offices, and even bedrooms all seem to work quite well with a gray-centric color palette.
When it comes to jazzing up your rooms with a bit of new flair, it’s honestly hard to go wrong with the home decor trends above. Of course, there are a number of other potential options as well. If you’re still feeling a bit hesitant to commit to any one design sensibility in particular however, you can always ask your friends and loved ones for their input. One of them may even know an interior decorator you can consult with. No matter the approach taken however, just be sure to have fun with the process to keep it from becoming too much of a chore. If you keep a positive attitude while decorating, the end result will be that much better.
